A week ago a bomb went off at the Boston Marathon.

For the last 18 years, the Boston Marathon has been a big part of our lives. We're not runners. Let me rephrase that. I'm not a runner. But a young friend of ours, a twelve-year-old, got cancer. It's about the most helpless feeling in the world when you visit a sick child in the hospital and there's nothing you can do.

That was how I felt last Monday - but not today...

My kids and I started watching The Amazing Race this year. (I think it's been on for 10 years - we're a little late to the party...) We have our favorites - and our "least favorites". (How are Chuck and Wynona still on? ) But I digress. The thing that really struck me was that they were missing their adventure.

The first week they were in Bali and it was extraordinarily beautiful. And they were missing it. They ran, jumped and dashed right through it. They were so focused on getting to the next task, that they didn't have a chance to stop and look around and say, "Oh WOW, we're in Bali!"

Last week I was doing a lot of travelling for my book. I was out in western Massachusetts in the...

I thought it was cool that the newly elected Pope ditched the "Pope mobile" and instead chose to ride the bus with the other bishops. He packed up his bags and paid his own bill at the hotel - when he could have easily asked others to do this for him - after all... he's the Pope!

Pope Francis is making a lot of little decisions to show his true colors and that he truly is a "pope of the people" and committed to his mission. He is named for St. Francis of Assisi, whose life's work was to care for nature, the poor and most disadvantaged. The Pope said a little bit of tenderness can "open up a horizon of hope."

He asked his Argentines to forego making the expensive trip to Rome for his inaugural mass and instead use that money to make a donation to the poor. He is offering such hope in difficult times.

Women of the people

Closer to home, the other news has been about two women in power: Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook for her book, Lean In and Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo! and new mom, who took away telecommuting for her workers...

I can hear the faint sounds of cup tapping and a muffled pitch of a sweet 10-year-old girl singing behind closed doors.

It's my awesome daughter.

She and her friend have been practicing for the last few weeks for the school talent show tomorrow night. It's in front of the whole school...and parents...and more importantly, in front of the "gossips" - their 'mean girls'. (Is there anything more terrifying than mean girls?)

They are doing a music number that involves synchronized cup flipping and singing - the song from Pitch Perfect.

Her friend just bailed on her...

He learns she was also having an affair with the Secretary of Defense, Gene Hackman. Hackman knew she was seeing someone else and wants to frame this other guy - whom they've conveniently deemed a Russian spy - and asks Costner to lead the charge (to find himself!). Hackman tells Costner he'll have the full backing of the Pentagon to find this "Soviet killer".

Costner excuses himself to use the restroom, locks the door and his knees give out and he collapses to the floor. She's dead! The Pentagon is going after him? You are right there with him. You can feel his panic. What is he going to do? There's no way out...

My cousin Paul was always cool.

Funny. Kind. Hard working. Good looking. Great guy. One of those types of guys that women talked about wanting to meet...and marry.

But they didn't.

Not only was he not married, he wasn't even dating anyone. How can that be?

Here was this great guy - and he was single? I asked him what was going on. Then it hit me. I said, "Paul, it's not you. It's your marketing."

He was working for his family's business - located in a basement office, out of a house, in a small town. He was great but nobody knew he was there.

So what about you?

Are you a fabulous employee - but out of work? Have a great new product or idea - but nobody knows about it? Make a killer guacamole? So how are people supposed to find you?

People think that emailing out lots of generic resumes with generic cover letters to generic human resource departments is going to get them noticed. It might. (Just like Megan Fox might walk into a basement office in the suburbs.) It could happen.

But I have another idea.

(I've tested these so I know they work.)

Here are 3 proven steps to improve your marketing - and find a job...

Oscar Wilde said,

"The only thing worse than being talked about, is not being talked about."

If you're in business, you know what he means.

Seems that the whole world is knee-deep in tweets and likes and posts and pins and on and on. And, if you're not in on the new social media conversations, it can feel lousy. Like EVERYONE else is at the party and your invite was lost in the mail. (You remember mail... the kind with a stamp.)

I've been working with entrepreneurs, new authors and businesswomen. Seems the number one thing they have in common is: how do you get others to talk about you? How do you get people to find you on Facebook? Retweet your message? Follow your blog?

Plus, while you're out chasing all these conversations, how do you find time to actually run your business?
